Sturgis also hosts an annual motorcycle rally during the summer. From the 2nd to the 11th of August 2019, people from all over the world will gather for 10 days and nights of fun. This is one of the world’s foremost events for motorcycle enthusiasts, and for many, it’s a once-in-a-lifetime dream to attend.
However, the Sturgis Motorcycle rally is going to be awesome even if you don’t necessarily ride motorbikes. Enjoy the music, get some great food, and simply appreciate the company of a colorful community, with over 500,000 attendees every year.
Sturgis has long been a worldwide epicenter for motorcycle lovers. The city’s relationship with 2-wheel rides goes a long way back, so much so that Sturgis is home to a Motorcycle Museum. There, visitors can marvel at some amazing vintage rides, as well as learn about some of the pioneers of motorcycle riding.
Surrounded by scenic nature, it not surprising that Sturgis is the perfect place for motorcycle rides. This beautiful area actually features many fantastic motorcycle paths, with breathtaking sides and amazing experiences.

If you are a fan of nature, you can’t miss the Black Hills National Forest. This is widely considered one of the most beautiful forests in America, and it offers a wide variety of landscapes. You’ll find striking mountains, stunning canyons, trails that seem to come straight out of a fairytale, as well as beautiful, thick vegetation, hosting a dense array of flora and fauna.
Sturgis is also close to Bear Butte. This mountain is smaller, but it is a really great spot for outdoor recreation, given the many facilities in the area!
As mentioned earlier, Sturgis is also a great base for your South Dakota excursions. Many people stop in the area when they’re about to visit iconic landmarks such as Mount Rushmore. This stunning attraction is famous all over the world. It is a national memorial, which features a gigantic sculpture that was made by carving directly into the face of Mount Rushmore itself. In other words, they carved the statue, featuring the faces of some of the most beloved US presidents, directly into the mountain itself!
Ever since its completion back in 1941, Mount Rushmore has grown on to become one of the most visited touristic attractions in the whole world, and arguably, it brought so many people to the Sturgis area as well!

The Sturgis Motorcycle Rally has a very storied past. In fact, the festival first took place in 1938, and it was created by a local motorcycle club known as Jackpine Gypsies, which actually still runs and operates the local motorcycle tracks, hillclimb as well as the event area hosting the rally!
What’s really special about this event is that it started out as a smaller local event, and it eventually became a fantastic international attractions, with millions of visitors attending through the years. This is a great place to marvel at some stunning vintage motorbikes, as well as simply having a great time with music, food, and more.
The Rally is actually a really important source of revenue for the Sturgis community. The event is so important, that it has been estimated that it brings about $800 million a year in revenue to the state of South Dakota, with the City of Sturgis itself earning upwards of $200.000 a year, just from selling event guides and from sponsorships. This is about 95% of the yearly revenue of the city, and this is the reason why the whole community is so keen on making this wonderful rally happen!
In Sturgis, camping is also very popular. Due to the fact that the area is surrounded by amazing natural landmarks, it is quite easy to find many amazing camping spots. Some of them are actually equipped with more amenities and features, while others are more basic, for people who truly love to experience close contact with nature. Fans of hiking, and other outdoors activities and sports are definitely going to treasure their South Dakota experience for life, and especially their time in Sturgis!
Granted, the rally brings in so many people, but it is not the only reason to visit this wonderful location!
