After a 25 year hiatus, Land Rover’s Defender is finally back in the United States. This vehicle, which has been around since the 1940s, is iconic to the Land Rover name and may be a serious contender for a great off-roading car. But, will it be able to beat the infamous Jeep Wrangler? As we take a closer look at the 2021 Land Rover Defender and 2021 Jeep Wrangler we’ll compare and see which vehicle will reign the champion for 2021.

We’ll start off our comparison of these two beauties by their looks. The 2021 Land Rover Defender took us by surprise as they strayed away from their iconic design and seemed to twist it with the look of a modern SUV. While some people may have liked the direction that they went with this, we were not major fans. It would have been nice to see a major redesign or more of a car that played more of an homage to the design that made this car so well known. While we do appreciate a bit of modernizing to cars, we just were not fans of this particular redesign and found it a little awkward looking. If you are looking for a car that has stayed true to its time, the Jeep Wrangler would take the cake on this one. Although the Wrangler has stayed pretty authentic over the years, it has received some modernization, but it has never changed the overall identity of the vehicle.

However, looks are not everything with cars, what is inside matters too. As we take a look at the interior one of the most important things that we can check out is the space and comfort. Jeep Wranglers have never been the most comfortable car, however, they have recently been working on making their cars more comfortable, they are still behind in comfort when compared to the Land Rover. The Land Rover’s seats are much more comfortable and the interior is more spacious as well. The Land Rover also has the option for 8 passenger seating, which is possible with their four door model. With the Wrangler’s four door model, the largest possibility is 5 passenger seating. If comfort and space are very important to you in a vehicle, the Land Rover would definitely be the better option for those things.

While we are checking out the inside of both of these vehicles, it is important to check the overall quality and technology as well. The 2021 Jeep Wrangler is the most technologically advanced Wrangler generation yet. This means that it has Apple CarPlay, Uconnect, Amazon Alexa, 4G LTE Wi-Fi Hotspot, 8.4 inch touchscreen, Android Auto, Forward Facing Off Road Camera, 7 inch Driver Info Digital Cluster Display, Remote Access, Search Send & Go, Vehicle Health Report, and much more. Along with all of this pretty neat tech, the overall quality of the interior is pretty nice. Although some parts may seem a little cheap, it is overall good value.

The 2021 Land Rover Defender is pretty technologically advanced as well. Some of the features it has are Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Pivi Pro infotainment system, 10 inch touchscreen, Optional 11.4 inch touch screen, Remote App, 12.3 inch optional interactive driver display, Head-up display, Wi-Fi Data Plan with up to 20GB per month, 3D Surround Camera System, Clearsight Interior Rear View Mirror, Wade Sensing, and more. While it seems like the Land Rover Defender offers much more in the realm of technology, some users have had many issues with it and too many of the parts seemed cheap. For the hefty price of the Defender, to us none of these things should be a concern, therefore we do not think it is a good value or that all of the extra features are worth the hassle you may encounter. If Land Rover is able to fix these issues however, then they may reign superior with technology and quality.

If you want to compare overall performance and power, the Jeep Wrangler would take the cake on this as well. The Jeep Wrangler is able to accelerate from zero to sixty in about 6.5 seconds, while their v8 engine is able to in about 4.5 seconds. The Defender takes 7.6 seconds, and even with the 6 cylinder engine, it is only able to reach 5.7 seconds. The fuel economy of the Wrangler is better as well. It does about 22 miles per gallon in the city and 24 miles per gallon on the highway. The Defender does about 17 miles per gallon in the city and 20 miles per gallon on the highway. But, the defender does have a larger fuel tank of 23.8 gallons, whereas the Wrangler only has 17.5 gallons. Both cars do well on and off the road. The Land Rover may be a smoother ride, but it is significantly more expensive.

Overall, the 2021 Land Rover Defender and 2021 Jeep Wrangler are both fantastic cars, but the 2021 Land Rover Defender did not meet our expectations like we had originally hoped. For the price you pay, it does not pack the punch it should, however, it is more comfortable and larger. If you are looking for the better value, the Jeep Wrangler is the better choice.
